Tracing My Life in IMDB’s Top 250: 153

Annie Hall: I’m not a huge fan of Woody Allan but this is possibly his best peice. I really think his style of odd quirky humor and direct narrative fits for this dynamic between these two characters and they seem genuine enough in this film as opposed to perhaps a little more forced in some of the others. The pacing of this picture can be a little slow for some people but it is a worth while watch.

Warrior: This is the first successful MMA drama that has been released with some great actors while they were still relitivly unkown. Scoring Tom Hardy before the attention he got of Inception and Dark Knight Rises is great for them because his star power really shines in this film. He is a good brooding kinda of character while still having this likeability and gentler side for certain scenes but you believe it when he destroys people in the ring. This film is a good ride for anyone in for some great fights and even better acting.

Kill Bill: Vol. 1: This is a classic japanese revenge story told in a modern setting with some wonderful actors and awesome choreography for the action sequences. The filmmaking is so well done that for the most part it is not too excessive when a fountain of blood flows from a severed limb but it seems to fit this hyper violent and yet realistic world he has created for it.

Trainspotting: The misadventures of five drug addicted and moraly ambiguous friends as they run rampent through brittian all while trying to scrape together the money for their next hit and the antics they get into once they have gotten that hit. This never ending cycle is the focus of this story and how difficult it can be to break.

Casino: People think this film is compleate fiction, that is false. Based on the early days of Vegas with the mob dealing in just about everything. Frank Rosenthal is the character Scorsese based this picture off of, his time as the unoffical leader of what was the Sands and his rise up the city power landscape. This film is a great look at a fantastical time in history with wild characters and crazy schemes that might get a few people killed.

The Wizard of Oz: Were off to see the wizard, this is a classic colorful tale about Dorthy the loveable girl from Kansas that turns the world of Oz on its head in her adventure to find the Wizard and get back home. This is a very family orientated movie and a real feel good kind of movie wich is nice to have around the hollidays.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid: an unconventional western if there ever was one, this film is really the story of two friends who are always trying to one up one another in the bromance of the wild west. Best friends who rob banks and out run the law from place to place together working for that perfect balance of fun and money. It is a very 70’s film with its humor and action and just all together story.

Platoon: A young soldier is torn between two comanding officers with opposing styles in a hellacious war that leads these men to do horrendous things. This film has a wonderful duality at its core and really makes you focus on Charlie Sheen’s character and his struggle with his morals and ethics in the midst of war as he battles his own deamons physcially and mentally.

Hotel Rwanda: How do you remain neutral in a land of civil war? With the country tearing it self around him one man must try to do all he can to protect his family and his friends from the ever increasing violence around him all the while maintining the front of his luxurious hotel compleatly neautral in these turbulant times. A stunning performance by Don Cheadle and a great story of survival.

The Sixth Sense: The breakout film for M. Night who loves the “Oh shit I never saw that coming” take on third acts in his films. This took the country by storm for its originality and uniqueness, the only problem is once you know the end, the rest is quite boring to view again. So while it is a great film to be seen and enjoyed for its horror, thriller and intense twists, but some fall short on the second viewing.

Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels: Here we go on another wild escapade through the british underwold where high stakes card games, sex shop owning mafia bosses with Big Chris thugs and a couple rare antique shot guns all get mixed together in a unique blend of tretchery, cons, and sheer dumb luck to make a funny and entertaining british gangster piece.

It Happened One Night: Now this is a staple in romantic comedies, a woman of welth marries a money hungry ass to the displease of her father. And once he’s had the marriage annuled she runs off to find her “Love” but along the way a man recognizes her, and agrees to help her for a small fee. And along the way with misadventures and cute moments something begins to develope. Now she must decide who her real love is. While the ride is familiar to most of us, this is one of the orginals of it and it is quite fun to see.

No Country for Old Men: This is another dark masterpiece by the coen brothers. A man who finds a satchel of dirty money in the texas desert gets hunted down by a seemingly unstopable force determined to get the money back. Anthoney Bardem’s performance is unforgettable as a cold calculated killer determined to fulfill his mission and the entire cast give stunning performances for thier respective roles.

Cool Hand Luke: A prison is never a good place, its even worse for someone who has a serious problem with authority and even moreso if that person with and authority problem has had a long and decorated military service. Cool hand luke is about a man who just will not stay down in the face of no one, guard or prisoner and how with this attitude he can shake up the working of that instituion.

The Deer Hunter: War can be insanity, and this film is a great alagorical peice about the destruction of a man’s mind due to the acts of war. Three friends enlist to join the vietnam war and we journey with them through their toughest ordeal and the reprecustions that ordeal has on the rest of their lives. With some extremely tense scenes the drama between the trio is very well done and still is concidered a great peice of work.
